Learning another language is hard work, and sometimes it is not fun. I wanted to create a unit that would captivate the learners’ attention and be challenging as well. Everybody likes food, and food is an important aspect in all cultures. I think my students should be interested in following a food unit. I would like to see my students achieve some broader goals such as building more food-related vocabulary, enhancing their writing skills, and becoming more comfortable with speaking in English in front of peers.
In addition, I believe that students can learn more than just “textbook stuff” at school, although that is very important. I think that my students should also learn more about themselves and the world at large. For that reason, I will introduce topics such as recycling and health. I want my students to question the issue of pollution of the earth, and I want them to critically think if we are being good stewards of the earth. I also want my students to critically think if they are taking good care of their bodies. In short, I would like to see my students experience a certain revelation… a renewed respect towards the world and towards themselves.
